Apple, Mac, & iPhone News...
November 9th, 2009
Hey, y'all,
It's a buggy and wormy day in the neighborhood...not exactly the Mr. Rodgers special, but interesting nonetheless. We'll kickstart the week in style here; check up on your "missing" Apple TV data, a meme that's only funny 'cause we're safe from it and a warning...Nokia users, you know you should have switched already!!
Apple TV Update
This weekend, Apple emailed TV users to ensure an immediate upgrade to their 3.0 software. We're used to having a quick fix after the initial release, but this wasn't how it went down with the iPhone software or the Snow Leopard updates: Apple exhorted its customers to update to 3.0.1 to fix a really nasty issue causing users to lose all their media. Unfortunately, though, that's all the update addresses, and the other posts on Apple's online discussion boards like the random restarting, freezing and screen problems are--so far--unaddressed. We'll probably have a 3.0.2 up and running soon, but get posting on that board if your Apple TV is behaving badly.
Never Gonna Give You Up
If you've never experienced a Rick Astly prank online, we're pretty sure you've never used the internet. As "funny" and "cute" as Rickrolling is, we felt totally burned when he came up on YouTube instead of the firey Lamborghini crash we'd been expecting. On second thought, it's probably better we saw Rick.
However, a Rickrolling good time is far away for jailbroken iPhone's owners, at least in Australia; a young hacker released a worm that attacks jailbroken phones running Secure Shell (SSH), a Unix encrypted data exchange program, that haven't changed the default password for the application. At least only a small number of users were affected, and the worm doesn't do any serious damage...the hacker insists he was only trying to teach users a lesson about being safe, but if he's prosecuted, we imagine Apple will help him out somehow since this is a perfect example of why you shouldn't jailbreak your iPhone!
Nokia Recalls
Apple isn't the only company experiencing bugs and defects lately; Nokia recently announced that some of its third party manufactured phone chargers could have loose plastic covers that may expose the inner workings of the device...and give an electric shock to folks who handle them when they're plugged in. While they're "not aware of any incidents or injuries related to these chargers," the provider is doing the right thing and offering free replacements to consumers affected by the recall. http://chargerexchange.nokia.com has been set up to let you know if your charger is affected.
What do you think the release of this worm means for iPhone safety? Tweet and tell.
Till tomorrow, Newsies...
