Apple, Mac, & iPhone News...
January 25th, 2010
Morning, all,
Goodness, time just flies, doesn't it? It seems like only yesterday we were counting down the month leading up to the big day, and now the expected release of the Apple tablet is upon us. There's more to this week than a hardware announcement, though...read on to breathe a sigh of relief for iPhone users everywhere.
First and Foremost
Everything concerning the tablet is still rumor and conjecture, and we are going to be much relieved come the 28th so we can talk about some actual specs instead of reported ones. UNTIL THEN....we hear the tablet may be compatible with more than one wireless network.
Despite differences in AT&T and Verizon's networks, both are said to be providing internet access for the tablet although we're still weeks to months away from an actual ship date--which, in case you didn't know, is a billion years in business decision time.
Hey, we've all watched AT&T's network get dragged down by the millions of iPhones gobbling up bandwidth--we can only imagine the disaster of epic proportions that could occur if a) the tablet is widely successful and b) is only available on one network.
Other Tablet "News"
In other assorted rumors, PCWorld is running an article providing proof of fifty Apple test tablets...apply your own quotation marks where necessary. We'd guess that the release is at 90% probability for this Wednesday, but the closeness to the expeceted announcement never makes rumors die down, you know.
Content rumors have been covered here before, but we'd like to take a second to point out the recent admission of invitation to Apple's event by gaming companies large and small including the giant Electronic Arts. This clearly points to Apple's desire to market this new technology as a mobile gaming platform in the spirit of the iPod touch--but can you imagine the newtork strain of thousands of teenage boys on World of Warcraft online? Wi-Fi only, please!!
AT&T to Lose Exclusivity
Another rumor, yes, but wouldn't it be a hilarious "One More Thing" for Wednesday's media event? Originating at HotHardware.com this rumor has spread like wildfire across the internet and has everyone (AT&T included, probably!) breathing easier.
The iPhone has been linked with AT&T since its release, but problems with network capacity have plagued both for years: if AT&T does indeed lose the exclusivity deal this week users and networks alike could become less crowded...as soon as another carrier accepts the iPhone onto their network. An easy chip replacement, yes, but since the refresh isn't due to roll out until June, we might have to wait to see the benefits of this regardless of when the deal expires.

Till tomorrow, Newsies...
