Attack of the Apps
MacTribe iPhone Apps Picks

Edited by Ilissa Knisley

Learnlift
LearnLift has made their presence known in the educational community as a leader in the teachings of specific subjects such as language, anatomy, and artwork. Their unique learning system was developed by the European psychologist Sebastian Leitner and is based on algorithms. This system enables users to retain information for the long-term rather than short-term by specifically testing you on the subjects you don't know well more frequently than the subjects that you are familiar with. Now you can learn any time you have a free moment: waiting in line, on the subway, or while traveling with LearnLift's new apps priced anywhere between $1.99 and $19.99.

1000 Famous Paintings by Memory Lifter
Museums are often the only places you can go to see rare and beautiful paintings. Now with "1,000 Famous Paintings" in the LearnLift series you can take the museum with you, viewing the masterworks anytime while learning their titles as well as the artists who created them. Spanning several different epochs including Baroque, Art Nouveau, Romanticism, and Impressionism, see the paintings in slideshow mode to familiarize yourself or use the "Learn Now!" option and test your knowledge by seeing the painting and typing in the correct artist, choosing between 2-4 multiple choice answers, or typing the title of the painting shown. Your record of right and wrong answers is always available, so start now...you'll be able to tell your Manets from your Monets in no time.
Price: $19.99

English/German Bundle
This language learning application acts like a German to English dictionary, but is so much easier than flipping pages in a book. With on the go convenience, view 1,000 flashcards of English and German vocabulary words with corresponding images behind them in 10 different levels of difficulty. Users can even hear native speakers converse in example sentences to practice their own pronunciation. With LearnLift's standard learning options, users can pick between multiple choice with 2-4 choices (depending on preference and optional "tricky distractions"), or try image recognition, listening comprehension, and sentences. With all the words you learn you can sprechen sie deutsch-or pick up more English-quickly and easily. Check your progress with stored statistics of how many right and wrong answers you get during each learning session. This app is a perfect travel companion and a great way to broaden your knowledge base and learn the basics of both languages. Vergnugen!

ECOcal
For the earth mother in all of us comes a calendar application that makes every day an interactive nature lesson full of beautiful colors and pictures. As time passes in real life, see the transformation from season to season on your phone as plants and animals are introduced within screenshots reminiscent of pop-up storybooks. Tidbits like how river otters like to slide through mud on the riverbanks and how all butterfly eggs have a hole in them to allow fertilization make you feel like you're back in science class-in a good way! Simply scroll though the months and touch the various images to learn something about our planet and its inhabitants that you may not have known before.
Price: $3.99

Viximo
Known for their application's popularity on the social scene, Viximo just came out with three more fun ways to pass the time: Voodoo Doll Revenge, Farm Piano, and PixelFish. Running the gamut from calming and relaxing to a little on the dark side each app has a different audience, but they're all the quality we expect from Viximo.

Voodoo Doll Revenge
Ever get so mad that you feel the need to physically injure someone? A safe-and jail free-way to get that aggression out is Viximo's "Voodoo Doll Revenge." Sneak a picture of your victim's face with your iPhone's camera or use a photo already in your photo library to create a custom voodoo doll in either female or male form. Then, get your juju on: set your doll on fire, poke it with pins, or tear it to pieces, just like you'd do to its human counterpart if it weren't illegal! Once demolished, you can share the aftermath of your aggression via TwitPic to Twitter or email it to your friends-or, if they're really unlucky, your enemies. We're not legal experts, but that may be harassment...
Price: $1.99

Farm Piano
This app delivers exactly what you expect: a keyboard that makes animal noises. The eight key mini piano is set on a farm and lets you choose between a pig, cow, sheep or duck to perform your musical masterpieces. Once a key is hit, you'll hear the note squealed, mooed, baaed, or quacked out...fun for kids and the easily entertained of any age! For a very low price, this app offers hours of unlimited entertainment, but if you want to try it before you buy it download Farm Animal Lite, which includes the same keyboard but limits your animal choice to the duck.
Price: $0.99

PixelFish
An aquarium on the go, PixelFish allows users to customize their own relaxing marine getaway by virtually creating their own fish tank. Customizable to the extreme, users can choose from crab, blowfish, clownfish, and shark to populate their aquarium and may decorate it with treasure chests and clams with pearls among other things. You'll be able to hear the bubbles with special sound effects for a realistic quality. You can also change your aquarium from day to night mode depending on your (or your fish's) mood. In typical Viximo fashion, you can share your creation with your friends and family via email or TwitPic to Twitter.
Price: $0.99

Bento
Users fell in love with Filemaker Inc.'s Bento in its original desktop form. Now this admired personal database system is available anytime you need it with the Bento application for the iPhone or iPod touch. The portable organization app comes with twenty-five pre-designed templates for inputting your day-to-day data including recipes, to-do lists, expenses, diet logs, notes, and contacts, to name a few. Your data can be stored in a variety of ways within each template, depending on whether photos, video clips, text, web sites, or addresses suit your needs best. Because Bento integrates with your other iPhone apps, your data can cross over; for instance, you can call a phone number stored in your contacts in Bento by simply tapping the number. The app can function by itself or work seamlessly with Bento 2.0v4 for Mac (desktop software), allowing synchronization in a variety of languages as long as there is a Wi-Fi connection.
Price: $4.99
AT&T Navigator
Traveling to a new place can be a very intimidating thing, especially if you are directionally challenged. We at MacTribe are big fans of using the Maps app that came with the iPhone to get directions, or the free app AroundMe to check out new things in the area but often times we wish these apps could do more. Our prayers have once again been answered with the AT&T Navigator powered by telenav. This app is simply incredible, offering users the best of all available technologies within one program. The main screen displays a list of four options to choose from: Drive To, Search, Maps & Traffic, and Tools & Extras. Drive To will allow you to type an address, look up a business, airport, or intersection that you'd like to drive to while displaying a map with your route and giving you audio commands in a typical GPS format. You can even choose which type of route you'd like to use, with choices between the fastest, traffic optimized and street and highway preferences. Once on your voice commanded route you're able to search for waypoints throughout your trip like gas stations, parking lots, shopping malls, and practically anything else you can think of. The Search option will allow you to choose from a list of places you may need, like coffee shops, movie theaters, banks, hotels, or the invaluable gas by price, which lists all of the nearby gas stations according to the lowest gas prices based on the grade that you need. This comprehensive app is much more thorough and specific than other navigational apps out there and is truly a must-have for travelers.
Price: Free to download with a $9.99 per month subscription fee on AT&T bill
